Kali Pasir Mosque

The Kali Pasir Mosque is the oldest mosque in Tangerang and one of the oldest in the region, established in 1700 on the banks of the Cisadane River in the heart of what was then the Chinese quarter. It is a living document of the cultural exchange that shaped this part of Java — built by Muslims, constructed with Chinese help, and sitting in a neighbourhood that has always been majority Chinese.

The building spans about 288 square metres and retains its original four pillars and the unusual small dome with its Chinese-influenced design. Despite multiple renovations over three centuries, the essential character survives. It is still an active place of worship, so visit respectfully and at appropriate times. The mosque sits in Pasar Lama close to Boen Tek Bio and the Benteng Heritage Museum, making this corner of town an easy half-day on foot.

A story
The Kali Pasir Mosque was built in 1700 by a Muslim missionary from Bogor who stopped here on his way to Banten and decided to stay. What makes it unusual is that it was constructed with the active help of the local Chinese community — a fact visible in the architecture, which blends Arabic, Chinese, and European elements. The small dome over the main prayer hall has a distinctly Chinese profile unlike almost any other mosque in Indonesia.
