Getting Around

The city centre is compact and walkable. Jalan Malioboro, the Kraton quarter, and Taman Sari are all within easy reach on foot from most guesthouses in the tourist zone.

For longer distances, TransJogja buses run fixed routes across the city and are cheap and air-conditioned. The GoJek and Grab ride-hailing apps work well in Yogyakarta and are the easiest way to get to the bus terminal or airport. Motorcycle taxis (ojek) are fast and cheap for short hops.

Becak (cycle rickshaws) are available near Malioboro but primarily for short tourist trips — negotiate the price before getting in. Renting a motorbike is straightforward from many guesthouses and is the most convenient option for visiting nearby sights independently, including the Prambanan temples and Kaliurang.
