Yogyakarta is the ideal base for exploring central Java's greatest sights. Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist monument, is about 42km northwest and easily visited in a half day. Prambanan, a magnificent 9th-century Hindu temple complex, is just 7km east and makes an easy afternoon. The Dieng Plateau, with its sulphur craters, coloured lakes, and ancient temples at 2,000 meters, is a longer but rewarding full-day trip — bring warm clothes. Solo, Java's other royal city, is about an hour away by train.
