Nest Sculpture — Gili Meno

Submerged just off Gili Meno's northeast coast at about five metres, the Nest is a circle of human figures installed on the seabed as both an artwork and an artificial reef. Snorkellers can see the installation clearly from the surface; divers can drift around it. The figures are now heavily encrusted with coral growth and provide shelter for juvenile fish.

The site is accessible from the beach without a boat — swim northeast from the main beach until you're over the reef flat, then look for the darkening of the seabed that marks the circle. The current here is gentle and the installation is suitable for confident snorkellers as well as divers.

A story
The Nest installation was created in 2016 by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, who has made a career of sinking sculpture gardens in reefs around the world. The figures — some connected in a ring, some solitary — are cast from local coral-friendly materials and have been colonised by soft coral and algae. The intention was always that the sea would take them over.
