Wapauwe Old Mosque is a rare surviving piece of early Islamic architecture in Maluku, with a simple form and traditional thatched roof that feel very different from newer urban mosques. Its age and setting make it one of Ambon's more distinctive cultural sights.
The mosque is still a religious place, so dress and behave accordingly. The trip out also gives context for Ambon's layered history, where spice trade, Islam, Christianity, and colonial power all left marks on a relatively small island.
