Getting Around

Rantepao is the hub. Most of the key sites fan out within 15 kilometres of the town, and the most popular way to see them is by renting a motorbike — rates are low and roads are generally in reasonable condition. If you don't ride, ojeks (motorbike taxis) are available from the town centre and drivers often double as informal guides. Negotiating a full-day ojek hire is common and cost-effective.

Minibuses connect Rantepao and Makale with outlying villages on irregular schedules, but the best way to reach Batutumonga, the Sa'dan valley, or the southern sites around Makale is with your own transport. A few operators in Rantepao rent bicycles, which work well for the flatter northern valley routes though less so for the steeper hill climbs west of town.
