Most travelers reach Tana Toraja from Makassar (Ujung Pandang), the provincial capital of South Sulawesi on the coast. The bus journey takes 8 to 10 hours along a well-maintained mountain highway via Pare Pare and the Enrekang highlands. Several bus companies run overnight services that depart from Makassar in the evening and arrive in Rantepao early in the morning. This is the most comfortable option, as the road through the mountains is winding and the daylight journey can be tiring. The last stretch into the highlands climbs steeply and rewards you with good views.
Makassar has direct flights from Jakarta, Bali, and most major Indonesian cities. There is a small airstrip at Rantepao (Pongtiku Airport) which occasionally handles small propeller aircraft, but schedules are inconsistent — check locally before relying on it.
