Pantai Matras

Quieter beach north of Sungailiat, dramatic granite boulders scattered across the sand

Pantai Matras is a step quieter than Tanjung Pesona, which makes it the better choice for anyone who wants some peace. The beach is wide and clean, the water calm, and the distinctive granite boulders that dot this stretch of Bangka's coastline are at their most photogenic here — great rounded rocks the colour of old bone, some emerging from the water, others half-buried in the sand. It's worth climbing the bigger ones at low tide.

The access road is simple and the beach has basic facilities. A few small warung serve food and drinks. It gets busy at weekends but never feels overcrowded; come on a weekday morning and you may have it largely to yourself.

A story
The huge granite boulders scattered across Bangka's beaches are among the oldest exposed rock in Southeast Asia, formed some 230 million years ago when Bangka was part of the ancient Sunda craton. They were already ancient when the first tin miners arrived, worn smooth by hundreds of millions of years of wind and rain into the shapes they have today.
