By air: Flying is the only practical way to reach Belitung. H.A.S. Hanandjoeddin International Airport, near Tanjung Pandan, has regular connections to Jakarta (about 1 hour) on Lion Air, Garuda Indonesia, and other carriers. Several daily flights operate in both directions. From other Indonesian cities, a connection through Jakarta is usually required.
By sea: A ferry service operates between Belitung and Pangkalbalam (Bangka Island), and onward connections to Palembang in Sumatra are possible. This route is slow — the ferry from Bangka to Belitung takes around 4 hours — but can work if you want to combine the two islands.
Getting around the island: Most visitors hire a motorbike or arrange a car with driver through their guesthouse for day trips. Distances are manageable — Tanjung Pandan to Tanjung Kelayang is about 40km — and the roads are in reasonable condition. Taxis and informal transport are available in Tanjung Pandan.
