Tanjung Tinggi is Belitung's most famous beach and probably its most photographed: a curving bay of white sand backed by a forest of massive grey granite boulders, the turquoise water crystal-clear between them. The scene is strange and beautiful — the boulders are so large and so oddly arranged that the beach feels like a film set, which is not entirely a metaphor since it served as a location for the 2008 film Laskar Pelangi (Rainbow Troops).
The beach is on the northwest coast, about 37km from Tanjung Pandan town. Swimming is good in calm conditions. On weekends, particularly during public holidays, it can get crowded with domestic tourists from Java. Come on a weekday morning for the best experience. Several warung (food stalls) operate on the beach; local grilled seafood is the thing to order.
