Gomo Megaliths

Pre-Hindu stone carvings and ancestor figures in the central highlands

The central highland district of Gomo contains some of the oldest visible monuments on Nias: rough stone seats, menhirs, and ancestor figures carved by the island's first settlers and predating any record of contact with Hinduism, Islam, or Christianity. Several sites are scattered between villages along bumpy back roads — Tundrumbaho, Lahusa, and Idanotae each have surviving megalithic groups.

Getting there is half the trip — a hired motorcycle from Gunungsitoli, a half-day of careful navigation on narrow roads, and a guide from a local village helps enormously since the stones are often hidden in scrub. The reward is one of the strangest archaeological landscapes in Southeast Asia.
