Pelantar II Market Street

Jalan Pelantar II is the main artery of Tanjung Pinang's trading quarter — a dense, chaotic street where Chinese provision shops, spice merchants, textile stalls, and repair workshops crowd together in two and three-storey shophouses that have barely changed since the 1970s. The buildings are faded and functional, the kind of commercial architecture that colonial cities produce when people are more interested in doing business than making architecture.

It is best on weekday mornings when deliveries come in by boat and the street is at its busiest. You can buy dried cuttlefish by the kilo, locally produced kopi, traditional Malay fabrics, and hardware items whose purpose you may never determine. The back alleys behind the main street are quieter and full of cats. Prices here are what locals pay — there is no tourist premium because tourists rarely come.
