Dalam Loka is the former wooden palace of the Sultan of Sumbawa, built in the late 19th century and now serving as the Regional Museum of Sumbawa Regency. The structure is an impressive example of traditional Sumbawan royal architecture — two large wooden buildings raised on 99 massive hardwood columns, with carved motifs decorating the structural elements throughout.
The museum inside holds artefacts from the sultanate period: textiles, ceremonial objects, weapons, and historical documents. The building itself is the real attraction — its age, scale, and craftsmanship are remarkable in a region where so many traditional buildings have been lost. It stands in the centre of Sumbawa Besar and is easy to combine with a visit to the nearby Bala Kuning.
The palace dates from the reign of Sultan Muhammad Shah Jalaludin III and represents the last flowering of traditional Sumbawan royal power before the Dutch colonial period consolidated its authority. Entry fees are nominal.
