Sulaymaniyah International Airport (ISU) has regular connections to Istanbul, Beirut, Dubai, and several European cities, alongside domestic Iraqi routes. It is served by Turkish Airlines, FlyBaghdad, and several smaller regional carriers. The airport is about 10 kilometres west of the city centre; taxis are the main transport.
Overland from Erbil (the other major city in the Kurdistan Region) takes about two hours on the main highway. From Baghdad the journey is longer and was for many years considered risky; the security situation should be checked before travelling overland through disputed territories between the Kurdistan Region and the federal Iraqi government's areas. Internal Kurdish region travel is generally safe.
Entry to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq is technically straightforward for most Western nationalities, who can obtain a visa on arrival at the airport or at the border crossings with Turkey and Iran. The Kurdistan Region operates its own immigration procedures independently from Baghdad.
