Things to Do

Sulaymaniyah rewards visitors who take the time to look beyond the surface. Two museums — the Slemani Museum for ancient history and the Amna Suraka for recent history — are among the most important in the region. The bazaar is large, bustling, and still a working market rather than a tourist experience. The surrounding mountains, accessible on day trips, have made Sulaymaniyah a summer destination for Iraqis escaping the heat of the south. The city's cultural life — its poetry, music, and art scene — is harder to access without local contacts, but worth pursuing.
