The Great Mosque of Sulaymaniyah (Mizgewt Gewre) is the main Friday mosque of the city, a large modern building completed in the early 2000s that replaced an earlier structure on the same site. The exterior is striking — a broad dome flanked by four minarets, clad in pale stone, set in a wide open plaza in the old city centre that gives a clear view from a distance.
The mosque is open to non-Muslim visitors outside prayer times; dress modestly and ask permission before entering. The interior is spacious and well-lit, with good quality tilework and calligraphy. Prayer rugs cover the entire floor.
The plaza in front of the mosque connects to the bazaar and the older commercial streets of central Sulaymaniyah, making it a natural centre point for exploring the old city on foot. Early morning, before the bazaar opens, is a good time to see the building without crowds.
