Dome of the Rock

Golden-domed 7th-century shrine on the Temple Mount

The 7th-century golden-domed shrine on the Temple Mount (Haram al-Sharif), built over the rock from which Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven and Jews believe Abraham nearly sacrificed Isaac. The interior is closed to non-Muslims, but the platform can be visited at restricted hours via the Mughrabi Gate next to the Western Wall. Times change frequently; check before going.
