Eating Out

Jerusalem food is serious: slow-cooked Palestinian lamb, fresh hummus, zaatar, stuffed vegetables, and the heavy aromatic cooking of the Mahane Yehuda market stalls. Mahane Yehuda (the shuk) is now as much an eating district as a market — bars and wine rooms have opened in the alleys and stay open late. Outside the walls, the restaurants on Emek Refaim in the German Colony and Jaffa Road in the centre are good bets. In the Old City, Abu Shukri at Via Dolorosa is famous for hummus; Lina in the Christian Quarter is a local favourite.
