Abu Shukri

Address 63 Al-Wad Street, Muslim Quarter, Old City

The most celebrated hummus counter in the Old City, on Al-Wad Street in the Muslim Quarter near the Fifth Station of the Cross on the Via Dolorosa. The hummus is served warm, topped with a puddle of olive oil and a scattering of chickpeas, with fresh-baked bread and pickles. The portions are generous, the price is low, and there is almost always a queue.

Abu Shukri has been feeding pilgrims, locals, and travellers for decades and shows no sign of changing anything about what it does. The space is cramped and the service is brisk, which only adds to the authenticity. If you are eating one meal in the Old City, eat it here. Open mornings and lunchtimes; closed in the afternoon. Cash only.
