Liberty Bell Park

Opened in 1976 to celebrate America's bicentennial, this nine-acre park is Jerusalem's most popular green space, connecting the German Colony neighborhood to the city center. A replica of Philadelphia's Liberty Bell gives the park its name, but the real appeal is the sprawling lawns, playgrounds, and a 1,000-seat amphitheater that hosts outdoor concerts and performances. Kids love Jerry the Dragon, a concrete play sculpture by Danish-Israeli architect Ulrik Plesner, and the Train Theater, a puppet theater housed in an old railway carriage at the park's northern end. It's a favorite with local families on Saturdays and a welcome break from Jerusalem's intensity.
