Mahroum is a Nazareth institution, a bakery and sweet shop in the old city that has been making Arabic pastries for generations. The knafeh — semolina pastry soaked in sugar syrup with a melted cheese filling — is their signature and among the best in the Galilee. It comes fresh and hot from large round trays. The baklava and mamoul (date-filled semolina cookies) are equally good.
Come mid-morning for the freshest knafeh; the shop closes early once the day's baking is sold. Eating here at a small table on the lane is one of the most satisfying cheap meals in the city.
