The Azusa limited express runs from Shinjuku station in Tokyo to Matsumoto in about two and a half hours — a scenic ride through the mountains. Matsumoto is also connected by limited express to Nagoya (about two hours) and Nagano (about fifty minutes). All services are covered by the Japan Rail Pass. Highway buses from Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya offer a cheaper alternative.
