Matsumoto's compact centre puts the castle, the merchant district, the river and the main museums within a 20-minute walk of each other. The further afield sights — the Ukiyo-e Museum, Asama Onsen, the wasabi farms — need a short bus ride or local train. A day is enough for the centre; two with the day trips and a soak at the onsen.
