Getting There

Niigata is two hours from Tokyo by Joetsu Shinkansen (Toki and Tokitoki services). The Shinkansen terminus is Niigata Station, which also connects to local JR lines along the Sea of Japan coast. Niigata Airport (KIJ) handles flights from Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo, and several Chinese and Korean cities — it's just 8 km from the city centre, reachable by bus in about 25 minutes. Ferries to Sado Island depart from Niigata Port (about 2 km from the station): jetfoil takes 1 hour 5 minutes, the regular ferry around 2.5 hours.
