Niigata's sights spread between the compact city centre along the Shinano River and the harbour. The Ponshu-kan sake tasting bar in the station is unmissable; the city's parks, river walks, and the Noh culture museum fill out a rewarding day or two before heading to Sado Island or the ski slopes.
