Niigata has one of the most extreme seasonal ranges of any Japanese city. Winter (December–March) brings heavy snow — the city itself can receive a metre or more, and the mountains inland get several times that, making the Echigo-Yuzawa and Myoko ski areas among the best powder destinations in Asia. Temperatures stay just below freezing. Spring (late March–May) sees cherry blossoms in Hakusan Park and a rapid thaw. Summer is hot and humid, with temperatures around 30°C; the Sea of Japan coast gets beaches and fireworks festivals. Autumn (September–November) is the most beautiful season for the surrounding rice country, turning gold before harvest, and the time for the Wara Art festival at Uwasekigata. The Kodo drumming group's Earth Celebration festival on Sado Island falls in August.
