The Northern Culture Museum preserves the mansion of a wealthy farming family, giving Niigata a very different historic register from port warehouses and modern shopping streets. Large tatami rooms, storehouses, gardens, and seasonal displays show the scale of rural wealth in the rice country around the city.
It is outside the centre, but the trip is worthwhile if you enjoy architecture and gardens. Visit slowly; the point is not a single object, but the way rooms, courtyards, and views into the garden build a picture of an old Echigo estate.
