Furano is one of central Hokkaido's easiest places to like. In summer the surrounding fields are striped with lavender and other flowers, while in winter the same mountain basin becomes a serious ski destination with dry powder and long groomed runs.
The town itself is practical rather than pretty, but it sits in a broad agricultural landscape with the Tokachi mountains on the horizon. Farm Tomita, Furano Winery, Ningle Terrace, and the ski slopes give it enough variety for more than a quick photo stop.
Come in July for lavender at its busiest and most colourful, or in January and February for skiing. Shoulder seasons are quieter, with good food, local wine, and big Hokkaido skies doing much of the work.
