Teradaya Inn

Inn where Sakamoto Ryoma survived an assassination attempt in 1866, preserved as a museum

The Teradaya is a Fushimi riverside inn that was the scene of one of the most dramatic episodes of the Bakumatsu period: in 1866 loyalist activist Sakamoto Ryoma was ambushed here by shogunate agents and survived only because his companion Oryo heard the approach and warned him while he was in the bath. The building was destroyed in the Toba-Fushimi battle of 1868 and the current structure is a later reconstruction.

The inn still operates as a guesthouse, and the ground floor is open for daytime visits as a small museum. The bullet marks on the walls are replicas. The area around the canal locks nearby -- the Fushimi port district where sake was loaded onto boats for Osaka -- retains its Edo-period character.
