Jonangu Shrine

Heian-period palace garden shrine famous for its seasonal wisteria and weeping plum trees

Jonangu stands on the site of a former detached imperial palace south of Fushimi, founded in 1082. The shrine gardens -- divided into five sections representing phases of Japanese garden design from the Heian to the Momoyama periods -- are open year-round but draw particular attention in February for the weeping plum groves and in late April for the wisteria tunnels, which are among the most photogenic in Kansai.

The shrine is considered a power spot for safe travel and changes of direction in life, and receives serious religious visitors as well as garden tourists. The camellia and azalea seasons in March and April are equally good.
