The Gekkeikan brewery has produced sake in Fushimi since 1637, and the ground floor of its former kura (sake warehouse) now operates as a museum and tasting room. The permanent exhibition traces the history of Fushimi sake-making -- the soft local water from Momoyama's springs was considered ideal for brewing -- with original vats, tools, and illustrated boards in English and Japanese.
The tasting counter at the end of the museum offers small pours of Gekkeikan's full range, including a limited soft sake brewed with the traditional kimoto method and sold only at this location. A souvenir bottle of the museum-exclusive brew makes a practical take-home purchase.
