Nara has a good range of restaurants in the streets around Kintetsu Nara Station and in the Naramachi district. The city's speciality dish is kakinoha-zushi — salmon and mackerel sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves, which act as a natural preservative and impart a subtle tannin flavour. Kaki (persimmon) itself is a Nara symbol; the city is also known for its sake, brewed by several traditional breweries in Naramachi. Mochi — sticky rice cakes — are sold at numerous shops near the park, often pounded to order in traditional mortars.
