Nara's sights cluster in and around Nara Park, making it one of the most walkable major heritage sites in Japan. The deer are everywhere, the temples are within twenty minutes of each other on foot, and even Heijo Palace — the excavated site of the original imperial capital — is accessible by bus. Beyond the park, the Naramachi merchant district and several quieter outer temples reward those who stay longer than the standard day trip.
