The Tsukuba Express (TX) is the easiest way in from Tokyo. Trains run from Akihabara Station to Tsukuba Station in about 45 minutes on the rapid service, departing frequently throughout the day. The line opened in 2005 and is modern and reliable. Several intermediate stations serve the suburban sprawl between the two cities.
From Narita Airport, the most straightforward option is a direct highway bus to Tsukuba Station, which takes around 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. Buses run several times daily. Alternatively, take the Narita Express or a limousine bus to central Tokyo and transfer to the TX.
By car, Tsukuba sits on the Ken-O Expressway and is reachable from central Tokyo in about an hour outside rush hour.
