When to Go

Spring (late March–May) is the most popular time to visit. Cherry blossoms appear on Mount Tsukuba and around the city in late March and early April, followed by wisteria and fresh green leaves through May. The weather is mild and comfortable for hiking, and the mountain trails are at their most beautiful. Crowds peak on April weekends.

Autumn (October–November) is the other prime season. Maple and zelkova trees on Mount Tsukuba turn from late October, and the cooler, drier air brings the clearest conditions for viewing the Kanto Plain from the summit. This is the best time of year to see Mount Fuji from the top — on a clear October or November morning, the view southwest is unobstructed for over 200 kilometres.

Summer (June–September) is hot and humid on the Kanto Plain, with temperatures frequently reaching 33–35°C in July and August. Hiking Mount Tsukuba in midsummer is possible but sweaty; the cable car is more appealing in the heat. The botanical garden's lotus pond is worth visiting in July.

Winter (December–February) brings cold, dry weather. Snowfall on Mount Tsukuba is possible, and the mountain may be icy above 600m, requiring care on the trails. The summit views of Fuji are at their best in winter when the air is coldest and clearest — on a still January morning, the mountain appears with unusual sharpness. The research district and indoor attractions like the Expo Center and JAXA are unaffected by season.
