Kōchi is a drinking city by reputation, and the izakayas around the Obiyamachi covered arcade and the streets behind Hirome Market are the place to experience this. The local custom of bekupai — a game played at bars that involves forcing the loser to drain their glass — has deep roots here. The local Tosa sake (particularly from Tosaturu and Suigei breweries) is excellent. Yuzu — the aromatic Kōchi citrus — flavours sours, shochu infusions, and craft beers.
