By train: Kōchi is on the Dosan Line, connected to Takamatsu (about 2 hours on the limited express Nanpu or Shimanto) and to Okayama on Honshu via the Seto-Ohashi Bridge (around 2.5 hours direct). There are also limited express services east to Tokushima (2.5 hours via Awa Ikeda). JR Pass is valid on all these routes.
By bus: Highway buses run to Osaka (around 5 hours), Kyoto (5.5 hours), and Tokyo (overnight, around 12 hours). The bus terminal is at Kōchi Station.
By air: Kōchi Ryōma Airport is about 10km east of the city centre. There are regular flights to Tokyo (Haneda and羽田), Osaka (Itami), Nagoya, and Fukuoka. Bus to the city centre takes around 35 minutes (¥740).
By ferry: An overnight ferry service runs between Kōchi and Osaka (Hanshin), departing early evening and arriving the next morning. Useful if you want to avoid the mountain roads or bring a bicycle.
