Kōchi is a compact city and easy to navigate. The main tool is the tram network (Tosa Dentetsu), two lines that cross the city on a straightforward east-west grid. The key stop for the castle and the Sunday market is Kōchi-jo-mae; for Hirome Market it is Obiyamachi. Single fares are ¥200 anywhere on the network, paid on exit. The trams run frequently and are easy to use.
Walking is feasible for the central sights. The castle, Hirome Market, the Sunday market, and the covered shopping arcades are all within 15 minutes of each other on foot from the tram stops.
Bicycle rental is available from several places near the station and from some guesthouses. The city is flat in the centre and cycling is a pleasant way to reach sights just outside the tram network.
Bus is needed for Katsurahama and Chikurin-ji. The sightseeing My Yu Bus does a loop of the main southern sights (Katsurahama, Godaisan, Harimaya Bridge) and is the easiest option if you want to do several in a day; buy a day pass at Kōchi Station for ¥1,000.
Taxis are available from the station and are not expensive by Japanese standards.
