Hirome Ichiba

Lively covered market hall where Kochi locals eat, drink, and gather

Hirome Market is Kōchi's most enjoyable gathering place — a covered market hall just below the castle with dozens of food and drink stalls arranged around communal tables. It is less a tourist attraction than a place where locals actually eat and drink, and at lunchtime or early evening it fills up quickly with salarymen, families, and students. Order katsuo no tataki from one of the fish stalls, grab a beer or a glass of local sake, and find yourself a space at the long shared tables. The atmosphere is lively and unpretentious. Go hungry.
