Yosakoi Festival

Kōchi's spectacular August dance festival — 200 teams, 20,000 performers

The Yosakoi Festival takes place each year on August 9–12 and transforms Kōchi into one of the great spectacles of Japanese summer. Around 200 dance teams — companies, university clubs, and community groups — compete over four days in multiple venues across the city, each performing a choreographed routine set to a version of the traditional Yosakoi melody remixed in their own style. The costumes range from historical to outlandish.

The dancing is genuinely thrilling: athletic, precise, and emotionally charged. Audience participation is common. The city's wide boulevards fill with moving stages and cheering crowds; at night the main venues stay lit and the energy shifts toward the competitive finales. Accommodation needs to be booked months in advance; come mid-week if you can, as the final weekend is the most crowded. The Kōchi Castle grounds and Obiyamachi area are the best central vantage points.

A story
Yosakoi was created in 1954 by Kōchi merchants who wanted to lift the city's spirits after postwar hardship. They combined traditional Bon dance movements with samba-style energy and a thumping drumbeat. The festival was a local event for decades; then a Sapporo version took off in the 1990s, and Yosakoi became a national craze. Kōchi-style remains the original and, many aficionados think, the best.
