Hanamaki

Iwate onsen town and birthplace of poet and author Kenji Miyazawa, with hot springs and museums devoted to his work.

Hanamaki is a quiet city in central Iwate best known as the birthplace of Kenji Miyazawa (1896–1933), the poet, children's author, and agricultural teacher whose stories — Night on the Galactic Railroad chief among them — are woven deep into Japanese childhood. The city has turned his legacy into a cluster of thoughtful museums and gardens, and it makes an easy and rewarding stop between Morioka and Hiraizumi.

The main draw is the Kenji Miyazawa Memorial Museum on a hill above town, which traces his short life across science, religion, music, and literature, and the neighbouring Miyazawa Kenji Dowa-Mura, a "fairy-tale village" that stages scenes from his stories. Beyond Miyazawa, Hanamaki is an onsen town: the Hanamaki Onsen district and the older hot-spring hamlets in the hills to the west are popular weekend escapes for travellers coming up from Sendai or down from Morioka.
