Hachinohe

Northern Honshu port city of seafood markets, gull shrines, and Sanriku coast walks.

Hachinohe is a working port on Aomori's Pacific side, far enough from the usual Tohoku route to feel like its own world. It is known for seafood, morning markets, summer festivals, and a coast where grassy headlands and fishing villages lead into Sanriku Fukko National Park.

The city is at its best when you mix food and shoreline. Hasshoku Center is a full seafood playground rather than a polite market, while Tatehana Wharf Morning Market is the big early start. Out by the water, Kabushima brings a shrine, a breeding colony of black-tailed gulls, and the start of the coast.

The spare day here should go south along the Tanesashi Coast. It is one of the most accessible pieces of the Sanriku shore, with open lawns, beaches, rock shelves, and small stations on the Hachinohe Line. Hachinohe is not sleek, but it has a strong northern appetite and a coastline that rewards getting out of the centre.
