Hoon-ji is a Soto Zen temple best known for its rakan hall, filled with hundreds of wooden disciples of the Buddha. The figures are not blankly serene; they grin, frown, gossip, and stare back at you with startlingly human faces.
The temple was founded in the 14th century and moved to Morioka with the Nanbu clan in the early Edo period. It sits in the northern temple district, a little away from the castle-centred tourist loop, which makes the visit feel like a quiet detour rather than a standard stop.
