Iwate Prefectural Museum

The Iwate Prefectural Museum (Iwate Kenritsu Hakubutsukan) is the main comprehensive museum of the prefecture, housed in a large complex on the northern edge of Morioka. Its collection covers natural history, archaeology, and the folk culture of the Tohoku region, with particular emphasis on Iwate's distinctive heritage.

The natural history galleries trace the geological and ecological formation of the Kitakami Mountains, while the archaeology section displays findings from Jomon and Yayoi period sites across the prefecture — Iwate has some of the richest prehistoric remains in northern Honshu. The folk culture galleries examine traditional crafts including Nanbu Tekki ironware and Nanbu Bijin sake production. The museum is aimed at a Japanese audience and signage is primarily in Japanese, but the collections speak clearly enough on their own.
