Aoba Castle Ruins

The hilltop ruins of Sendai's original castle — properly called Aobajo — are the natural vantage point over the city. Little survives beyond a stone wall section and a turret, but the elevated position offers good views east toward the coast and out across the urban sprawl. The bronze equestrian statue of Date Masamune on horseback, wearing his distinctive crescent-moon helmet, is the city's defining image.

The ruins are a 20-minute bus ride from the station or a pleasant walk uphill through the old residential neighbourhood. A small museum on-site (the Sendai City Museum is nearby) covers the castle's history and the Date clan. Come in late April or early May if possible — the hill is thick with cherry blossoms and the combination of castle walls, pink trees, and city views is exceptional.

A story
The castle was never captured in battle. Instead, it was dismantled by its own garrison in 1871 following the Meiji government's abolition of the domain system. Fires and earthquakes took care of most of what remained. The equestrian statue of Date Masamune that surveys the city from the hilltop was cast in 1935 and survived the war intact while the castle did not.
