The Tomizawa Site Museum protects a remarkable geological discovery: a 20,000-year-old fossilized forest buried beneath the Sendai coastal plain, its stumps still standing in their original positions. The exhibition building was constructed over the actual site, and visitors walk on elevated platforms above the preserved forest floor.
The museum is in the southeastern part of the city, near the coast — an area heavily affected by the 2011 tsunami, which adds another layer of meaning to a site already about the power of sudden environmental transformation. The scientific story is clearly explained (in Japanese with some English interpretation), and the sight of ancient wood still rooted in place is genuinely striking. Allow about an hour and a half; take the subway to Tomizawa Station on the Namboku Line.
