Jordan Museum

Jordan's national museum, home to the Ain Ghazal statues

Address Ras al-Ayn

The national museum, opened in 2014, and one of the best in the Middle East. The first gallery alone — holding the Ain Ghazal statues, nine thousand years old and among the oldest large-scale human figures ever made — is worth the visit. Other highlights include several of the Dead Sea Scrolls (on rotation), the Copper Scroll, Nabataean inscriptions, Umayyad frescoes and an excellent overview of Jordanian history from the Palaeolithic onwards. Skip it at your peril if you are heading out to Petra.
