Roman Baths

Amman's Roman baths complex — one of the largest excavated in the eastern Mediterranean — lies partially under the modern downtown streets. The visible remains include substantial sections of the hypocaust heating system (the raised floor channels through which hot air circulated to heat the bathing rooms), portions of the frigidarium (cold bath) walls, and a giant hand, foot, and torso from what must have been a colossal statue, probably of Hercules, found in the rubble and now displayed at the site.

The baths date from the 2nd century AD and were in continuous use through the Byzantine and early Islamic periods. The excavated area is fenced and lit at night, visible from the street. A short walk connects them to the Nymphaeum and Roman Theatre as part of the downtown Roman circuit.
