Café Kishlak

Kishlak is a popular lunch spot in the city centre, specialising in Uzbek food — plov (the fragrant rice dish cooked in a massive kazan over open flame), non flatbread fresh from the oven, and Uzbek-style kebabs. The plov here is cooked the traditional way: rice and meat in a single pot, the fat of the lamb rendering into the rice as it cooks. It is straightforward, filling, and very good.

The café is informal and fast, with a canteen-style service that makes it excellent value. The walls are hung with kilim rugs and the seating is a mix of low tables and regular chairs. Popular with office workers at lunchtime; quieter in the evenings. The bread alone is worth a visit.
