Almaty rewards exploration in all directions. The city centre is compact enough to walk, and the mountains to the south are never more than a taxi ride away. The mix of Soviet-era monuments, Central Asian bazaars, wooden tsarist-era architecture, and world-class skiing is unlike anywhere else in the region.
